Clarksburg, Elk Creek and the West Fork River

Clarksburg is one of West Virginia’s oldest cities. It grew up where Elk Creek flows into the West Fork River, was chartered in 1785, and has been the Harrison County seat since the county was formed in 1784. Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson was born here in 1824. The rolling hills of Harrison County drain to the West Fork and its tributaries, so when heavy rain falls, the small creeks and runs come up quickly.

The railroad’s arrival in the 1850s opened the area to development, and Clarksburg reached its peak population around 1929. That growth left the city with a lot of older homes and downtown buildings. Older construction tends to mean basements with stone or block walls, plaster, original woodwork and wiring and plumbing that have been updated piece by piece. We take the time to understand how a building was put together before we decide what to remove and what can be dried and saved.

Bridgeport and Simpson Creek

Bridgeport took its name from a bridge over Simpson Creek. It was chartered in 1816 and incorporated in 1887, and today it’s one of the fastest-growing cities in the state, sitting where U.S. 50 meets Interstate 79. Alongside its older homes, Bridgeport has newer neighborhoods, finished basements, offices, medical buildings and businesses along the I-79 corridor. Downtime matters to a business, so we work to secure the building, dry it out and get repairs moving. Our Bridgeport and Clarksburg general contractor team handles commercial remodels, additions and rebuilds, too.

Flash Flooding in August 2026

In August 2026, flash flooding hit Harrison County hard. Elk Creek flooding was reported in Clarksburg on August 16. On August 17, local officials said a little over two inches of rain fell in about 25 minutes. Simpson Creek put several feet of water on Wayne Jamison Field at Bridgeport High School and came close to flooding the Main Street fire station. In Clarksburg, firefighters went to homes to shut off electricity and natural gas as basement water rose.

Weeks or months later, water that soaked into drywall, insulation, subfloors and crawlspaces can still be there, and that’s where mold starts. If your home or business took on water, a moisture check is worth it. Our inspections are free. See water damage restoration and mold remediation.

Basements, Burst Pipes and Sewage Backups

Many water calls in town start in the basement: groundwater after long rains, a failed sump pump, a burst pipe in winter, or a sewer backup during a heavy storm. Sewage backups are Category 3 water and need careful cleanup. See sewage backup cleanup. If a pipe bursts, we make temporary fixes to stop the damage until a licensed plumber can make the permanent repair, then dry and rebuild. See frozen and burst pipe repair.
