Three Rivers Run Through Barbour County
Barbour County is drained by three rivers: the Tygart Valley, the Middle Fork and the Buckhannon. The Buckhannon River flows north out of Upshur County and joins the Tygart in Barbour County, so heavy rain around Buckhannon ends up here, too. Philippi sits on the Tygart Valley River in the center of the county, where U.S. 119 and U.S. 250 meet. Belington is about ten miles southeast on U.S. 250.
The river has a long memory in Philippi. During the November 1985 flood, the Tygart crested nearly 15 feet above flood stage at Philippi, about four feet higher than the previous record, and the town was badly damaged. Water ran over the covered bridge and the North Philippi bridge, and floodwater in the old train depot washed away many artifacts from the Barbour County Historic Museum.
Floods like that are rare, but water damage isn’t. Creeks that rise after a hard rain, wet basements, sump failures and leaks all cause damage that needs to be dried out properly before mold sets in. See water damage restoration and mold remediation.
Philippi’s Covered Bridge and Historic Downtown
Philippi’s covered bridge was built in 1852 by Lemuel Chenoweth and still carries U.S. 250 across the Tygart. It’s the only covered bridge on the U.S. numbered highway system. It survived the first land battle of the Civil War on June 3, 1861, the 1985 flood, and a fire in 1989 that nearly destroyed it before it was rebuilt and reopened in 1991.
The Philippi Historic District is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and many homes and buildings in and around town are decades old. Older construction often means plaster walls, original trim and wood floors, stone or block foundations and wiring that needs careful handling after a water loss or fire. We take the time to understand how a building was put together before deciding what to remove and what can be dried and saved.
Winter, Storms and Rural Properties
A lot of Barbour County is farms, hollows and homes set back on long lanes. A burst pipe in a farmhouse or an empty rental can go unnoticed for days, and a downed tree can take out power and open up a wall at the same time. If a pipe bursts, we make temporary fixes to stop the damage until a licensed plumber can make the permanent repair, then we dry and rebuild. After a storm, we board up openings, put emergency tarps over roof openings, clear debris and repair the interior. See frozen and burst pipe repair and storm damage repair.
