Elkins and the Tygart Valley River
Elkins sits on the upper Tygart Valley River, where the river cuts northwest through a gap between Rich Mountain and Laurel Mountain. South of town, the river’s broad bottomlands stretch about 35 miles up the valley from Valley Head. Leading Creek joins the Tygart just downstream of Elkins, and smaller runs such as Craven Run flow through town on their way to it.
That much water in a mountain valley means flooding is part of local history. In the Election Day flood of November 1985, heavy rain moved over the Elkins area on November 4, and parts of the Tygart Valley River reached record levels. Downstream at Philippi, the river crested nearly 15 feet above flood stage.
You don’t need a historic flood to end up with water in the house, though. A creek that comes up after a hard rain, a basement that seeps every spring, or a sump that can’t keep up can do plenty of damage. If water gets in, we remove it, dry the structure, check for hidden moisture, and make the repairs. See water damage restoration.
Once it’s dry, we rebuild. See damage repair and rebuild in Elkins.
Railroad-Era Homes in Elkins
Elkins was built as a railroad town. Henry Gassaway Davis and his son-in-law Stephen B. Elkins brought the West Virginia Central & Pittsburg Railway into the valley in 1889, and the city was incorporated in 1890. The town grew fast over the next ten years, and a housing boom followed. Many homes in and around Elkins have been standing for generations.
Older houses need a careful approach after damage. Plaster walls, original trim, hardwood floors, stone or block foundations and old wiring all affect what can be dried and saved and what has to come out. We look at how a house was built before we start tearing anything out, and we explain the options as we go.
Mountain Winters in Randolph County
Randolph County is the largest county in West Virginia, and much of it is high country. Elkins sits at about 1,930 feet, and many of the mountains to the east top 4,000 feet. Winter can be hard on pipes in crawlspaces, exterior walls, farmhouses, cabins and seasonal places that sit empty for weeks.
When a frozen pipe splits, shut off the water and call us. We make temporary fixes to stop the damage until a licensed plumber can assess the line and make permanent repairs. Then we dry, clean and rebuild. See frozen and burst pipe repair.
Storm Damage in the Valley
Wind and heavy snow bring down trees and limbs across the county’s wooded hillsides. After a storm, we can board up broken windows, put emergency tarps over roof openings to keep water out, clear debris and repair the interior damage. Learn more about storm damage repair.
