The West Fork River and Weston’s Flood History

Weston, the Lewis County seat, grew up along the West Fork River, and the river has shaped the town’s history. Downtown Weston has a high-water marker showing how high the West Fork crested in the town’s major floods, including the 1950 flood of record and the November 1985 flood.

Stonewall Jackson Lake, the Army Corps of Engineers reservoir on the West Fork a few miles upstream of Weston, was completed in 1988, largely to control that flooding. It helps on the main river, but it can’t stop flash flooding on the smaller creeks and runs that feed into town, or water that comes from heavy rain on saturated hillsides.

July 2026 showed what that looks like. Several inches of rain fell on northern Lewis and Upshur Counties on July 21–22. Water got into businesses along the Route 33 corridor in Weston, US-33 toward Buckhannon was blocked by high water, and I-79 between Weston and Jane Lew was shut down overnight. Lewis County was included in the federal disaster declaration (FEMA DR-4932). If your home or business was affected, our flood recovery page lists local resources.

Jane Lew and the I-79 Corridor

Jane Lew sits along I-79 north of Weston, with homes and businesses spread along the interstate, local creeks and the West Fork. With the interstate running through the area, damage can hit commercial properties, warehouses and rental properties as well as homes. Downtime matters when you run a business, so we work with commercial owners to secure the building, dry it out and get repairs moving. Our general contracting team handles commercial rebuilds, too.

Lake-Area Homes, Camps and Rentals

Properties near Stonewall Jackson Lake and out in the county include second homes, camps and rentals that may sit empty for stretches of time. Those are exactly the places where a burst pipe in January or a slow roof leak after a storm can go unnoticed for days. If you own a property you don’t visit often, have someone check it during cold snaps and after major storms. If you find damage, we can help you document it for insurance and get it dried and repaired.

Older Homes in Weston

Weston was founded in 1817, and many homes in and around town are well over a century old. Older construction often means stone or block foundations, damp basements, plaster walls and plumbing that has been patched over the years. We take the time to understand how an older building was put together before we decide what to remove and what can be dried and saved.
