Living Along the Buckhannon River

The Buckhannon River runs north through the heart of Upshur County, past Sago and through Buckhannon, before it joins the Tygart Valley River in Barbour County. French Creek and Fink Run are among the streams that feed it. For most of the year it’s a place to fish and paddle, but it has a long history of leaving its banks. That history is why the city’s flood protection work along the river channel was done decades ago.

The July 2026 storms were a reminder. Heavy rain on July 21–22 pushed the Buckhannon River well above flood stage in town, and small streams around Buckhannon rose fast. Upshur and Lewis Counties were included in the federal disaster declaration for those storms (FEMA DR-4932).
